• Uniform Civil Code won’t benefit Hindus: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in Murshidabad

  • Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday lambasted the BJP for using the uniform civil code (UCC) as a poll plank and said the Hindus will not benefit from it.

While addressing a public meeting at Jangipur in the minority-dominated Murshidabad district, Banerjee said, “Whenever there are elections, they (BJP) use one issue or the other to create communal tensions. This time they are talking about the UCC and are propagating that it is against a particular community. But this UCC is nothing but political rhetoric and Hindus in no way will benefit from it.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently accused the Congress of advocating personal laws and claimed that the BJP-led government at the Centre will implement a UCC.

Speaking on the issue, the Bengal CM said, “If people don’t want the Constitution to break down or the country to be sold, people must decide now. The BJP has brought in the UCC as a part of its divisive political strategy. This won’t benefit any community. Modi and his team only spread lies. If the BJP comes to power again, people will lose their freedom.”

She further said, “We will not allow CAA, NRC, and UCC in Bengal as we believe in unity in diversity. We will stand together. For 12 years now, we have been proving this true in Bengal.”

Meanwhile, Banerjee claimed that the BJP government under PM Modi will fall after the Lok Sabha polls.

“In the first two phases itself, the BJP’s prospects have fallen. They are scared of the remaining five phases. In the two phases, the polling percentage has also gone down. In 2004, during (former prime minister) Atal Behari Vajpayee’s tenure, they had given India Shining slogan. But the people gave a completely opposite verdict. This time, Prachar Babu (referring to Modi) is spreading lies through their campaign and propaganda,” she said.
