• NGO appeals minister to reconsider allotting Sarobar plot for sports academy

  • KOLKATA: Sabuj Mancha, a platform of organisations and individuals supporting environment has sent a letter to urban development department minister and KMDA chairman Firhad Hakim, asking to withdraw the decision of handing over a ground near gate no 8 of Rabindra sarobar to a private agency for developing a sports academy.

    "We are appealing to the authorities to reconsider the decision by withdrawing the handing over of the piece of land and instead, an urban forestry could be developed at the place which would help in increasing greenery and improve air quality inside the lake area," said Sabuj Mancha general secretary Naba Dutta.

    Sabuj Mancha along with a group of lake morning walkers and a few other NGOs recently held a green march at the lake premises to protest against the plan to use the land for developing a sports academy.

    A senior urban development official said that the matter will be looked into. As per KMDA sources, an organisation has got allotment of a portion of an abandoned ground near gate no 8 to develop a sports training facility and academy for children to get sports training.
