• Maximum temperature touches 43°C in Kolkata, Kalaikunda becomes state’s hottest place at 45.4°C

  • On a day when the highest temperature rose to 43 degree Celsius in Kolkata, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said some districts in West Bengal may see light rainfall from Sunday. Meanwhile, the highest maximum temperature in West Bengal on Tuesday was recorded in Kalaikunda after the mercury touched 45.4 °C.

    On Monday, the highest temperature in Kolkata was 41.7 °C.

    On Tuesday, Panagarh recorded a highest temperature of 44.8 degree Celsius, Bankura saw the mercury touching 44.2 degree Celsius. In Sriniketan, Canning, Krishnanagar, Jhargram, Purulia and Asansol, the maximum temperature hovered around 42-43 degree Celsius. Burdwan, Jhargram, Behrampur and Kalyani recorded 42 degree Celsius.

    On Tuesday, the sky remained clear in the daytime and became partly cloudy towards the evening with no sight of rainfall. The IMD has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions in the city, which is expected to prevail till Thursday.

    Meanwhile, eight districts across the state will continue to be under red alert for severe heat wave conditions and warm night conditions till Thursday. These districts are Purulia, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Bankura, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad.

    An orange alert for heat waves has been sounded in these districts after Thursday. An orange alert for heat waves has been issued in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Howrah, Kolkata, Hooghly and Nadia till Saturday.

    The IMD reported that light rain along with thunder is likely to occur at some places of the southern districts, like North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia on Sunday.

    Kolkata might experience very light rain as well. From Monday next week, light to moderate rain is likely to occur throughout the entire southern districts.

    The IMD also reported no larger change in the daytime temperature in the next four to five days in the districts of West Bengal. It further said that the districts may record a fall in the mercury by 1 or 2 degree Celsius after that.

    The minimum relative humidity is likely to be in the range of 20-40 percent during the afternoon in the districts of Bengal and the maximum relative humidity is likely to be in the range of 70-90 per cent during afternoon in the districts of West Bengal.

    Meanwhile in North Bengal, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar are experiencing light to moderate rain, which is likely to continue till this week. Whereas, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda are experiencing an orange alert for heatwave conditions that is likely to occur at one or two places on Tuesday. Highest maximum temperature recorded in north Bengal was in Raiganj at 42.7 degree Celsius.
