• 'Tunnel work at disaster-hit Bowbazar to be over by Dec'

  • KOLKATA: Roop N Sunkar, Member Infrastructure, Railway Board on Sunday inspected the disaster-hit Bowbazar zone of East-West metro alignment (Green line) to take a stock of the progress of the work. He later told the media that the tunnel work at the disaster zone will be complete by December 2023, paving the way for a complete metro run along the alignment.

    After completing Esplanade Metro station inspection, Sunkar personally went to see the Bowbazar area where disasters hampered the progress of Metro work. He undertook an inspection on foot inside the tunnel. He said all the necessary measures were adopted to complete the work without compromising the safety issues.

    Sunkar, who was accompanied by HN Jaiswal, Principal Chief Engineer, Metro Railway and Managing Director, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), and other senior officials, started this inspection from Howrah Maidan Metro station where he inspected different passenger amenities like lifts, escalators, ticket counters, Tunnel Ventilation System, Station Cooling Arrangements.

    He also conducted a trolley inspection from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade Metro station under the river Hooghly. On his way to Esplanade, Sunkar passed through the tunnel under the river Hooghly and inspected a Cross Passage.

    During his inspection of Howrah Metro station, the deepest Metro station in the country, he enquired about different technical parameters of the station and took stock of the passenger amenities to be provided there.

    At Esplanade Metro station, the member-Infra checked the passenger inter-changing arrangements to be made available here once East-West Metro starts commercial services from Sealdah to Howrah Maidan. Esplanade Metro station will be one of the most important stations of both North-South and East-West corridors.

    He also inspected the stretch from Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector V of the East-West Metro Corridor in a Metro. Later, Member, Infra also inspected Hemanta Mukhopadhyay station of the New Garia-Airport (Orange) Line.
