  • Kolkata: Metro neared 7.5lakh footfall on Friday, clocking 7,43,853 passengers along the North-South line as pandal-hoppers thronged pandals across the city, making the most of the rain-free pre-Puja day.

With rain forecasts from late on Shashthi, millions hit the streets on Saturday and Metro trains ran packed to the brim. On Thursday, the Kavi Subhas-Dakshineswar corridor had breached 7 lakh passenger mark, only 24 hours after it had crossed the 6.5 lakh milestone on Wednesday. On Chaturthi (Thursday), the North-South corridor, the city’s lifeline and the prime indicator of the city’s crowd meter during the festive days, carried 7,10,521 passengers against the 6,68,504 footfalls the day before, on Tritiya.

On Friday, the corridor was barely 6,000 short of the 7.5 lakh milestone with 288 services available during the day. The gross earning was Rs 1,19,46,315 against Thursday’s Rs 1,06,81,378. Most footfalls were recorded at Dum Dum station (90,286), followed by Kalighat (53,266), Esplanade (52,190) and Rabindra Sadan (40,497).

From this year, Metro is once again providing night-long trains.
