  • GUWAHATI: After a four-day search, the body of the circle officer, who had gone missing after a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river in Assam's Dhubri district on Thursday, was found on Sunday. Rescue teams of NDRF, SDRF and BSF traced the body of officer Sanju Das nearly 700 metre downstream from the accident spot.

On Thursday, the mechanised boat, which was carrying 28 passengers, capsized in the Bhasanir area, which is about 8 km away from the Dhubri town. The accident took place after the boat had hit a pillar of the under-construction Dhubri-Phulbari bridge over the river. Among the 27 rescued passengers, some swam safely to the bank, while others were saved by the rescue teams.

Dhubri district deputy commissioner Anbamuthan MP said, "The rescue teams spotted the body of officer Sanju Das floating on water."

Anbamuthan had feared that Das' body might have been washed away by the Brahmaputra to Bangladesh. On Friday, he had sent a written request to Rejaul Karim, the deputy commissioner of Kurigram district in the neighbouring country, to conduct an operation to trace his body. The Indo-Bangla border is about 10 km from the spot. "That is why we had feared that the body might have been swept away by the river to Bangladesh," Anbamuthan said.
