AGARTALA: A 28-year-old youth died while sleeping after lightning stuck his house on Saturday night in Uttar Bijaypur village of Sabroom in South Tripura district, police said here on Sunday. The youth has been identified as Bhrasanai Mog.
As forecast, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms swept Tripura from late Saturday night and spoiled the Durga Puja fervour. A bolt of powerful lightning struck the thatched hut early in the morning when the youth was asleep. Mog died instantly.
Police said other members of the family were safe. The doctor at a local hospital, where he was taken by his family members, declared him brought dead.
The rain till Sunday morning cooled down the weather, which had been hot and humid for the past few days.
The meteorological department said rainy weather in Tripura will continue at least for another 24 hours. It said the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Tripura has been extended for another two weeks due to a sudden change in the movement of high moisture air.
