  • KOLKATA: Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned for Howrah City Police and Barrackpore City Police to set up their own modern CCTV cameras, including automatic number plate recognition system (ANPR) cameras and pan tilt zoom (PTZ) cameras at sensitive points. Each commissionerate will receive Rs 5 crore, said home department sources.

A part of the funds will be used to modernize the unified control room so that all these cameras can be monitored from one spot.

“We have studied the vulnerable points in our area and completed mapping them. The Howrah City Police currently uses over 800 high-end cameras. Our survey found that we need more coverage on state and national highways. We will set up ANPR cameras at all entry and exit points of Howrah city. We also wish to cover riverine areas that are crime-prone and the ghats which are visited by thousands on festival days,” said Howrah commissioner Praveen Tripathi.

In the Barrackpore City police area, where 3,000 CCTV cameras have been set up (mainly on BT Road covering Dunlop, Rathtala, Sodepur crossing and Barrackpore Chiria More), the main effort will be to set up more cameras covering Nagerbazar. CCTV cameras will be set up on Jessore Road, Kalyani Expressway and Belgharia Expressway.

Bidhannagar City Police has also been provided Rs 5 crore. A couple of days ago, a control room was inaugurated at Bidhannagar East police station to monitor the feed from 32 CCTV cameras.
