  • The West Bengal Cabinet on Friday approved the proposal to provide a government job each to the families of those who were killed in the violence during the panchayat elections held in the state this year.

According to the state government, 35 persons died in violence during the panchayat polls.

In the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna, the state secretariat, it was decided that the state Home Department would provide jobs of home guards to a member of each of the families of those killed in the poll violence.

CM Banerjee had in July announced to provide government jobs to the victims of the election violence. Earlier, the State Election Commission had also announced compensation for the election workers who were injured during the panchayat poll violence. However, the Opposition parties have insisted that more people died in the poll-related violence.
