Kolkata: Officers of Kolkata Police’s homicide division have seized CCTV footage of Amherst Street police station and have questioned officers between Friday and Saturday while probing into the death of Ashok Kumar Singh (42), who died inside the police station on Wednesday evening.
“We have collected the hard disk with the CCTV footage of the police station when Singh had visited on Wednesday. We have also questioned 17 people, including policemen and other witnesses,” said an officer.
While family members claimed Singh was beaten up by cops and had even moved court seeking justice, cops have so far ruled out any instance of assault and said the death was due to “intracranial haemorrhage” possibly caused by a “rupture of a brain aneurysm”.
Acting on the court order, officers seized the hard disk and shifted Singh’s body from Kolkata Police Hospital to SSKM Hospital on Friday. After a fresh order by the HC, cops handed over the body to his family and transported it in a hearse with a police pilot car from the hospital to the crematorium.
“We had gone to SSKM hospital to retrieve the body on Thursday but the cops had refused. So we moved court again and finally got his body for cremation,” said Bijoy Shaw, Singh’s nephew.
The postmortem report said Singh had been suffering from “a pre-existing disease, may be malignancy”. However, Singh’s relatives TOI spoke to on Friday and Saturday had denied knowledge of any pre-existing disease.
