Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police has made the first arrest for the assault on five women near a snack hub off EM Bypass a day after Diwali. The women were out on a drive and having snacks after a Diwali get-together. They were beaten up allegedly by a group of slum-dwellers.
Arun Majumdar (50) was arrested from his home at Duttabad after cops spotted him on CCTV footage.“We took some time to identify the assaulters as the complainants hadn’t named anyone in their complaint. The man was spotted on the CCTV footage and his description also matched with the statements by the victims,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City police.
Around 9.45pm on Monday, three of the girls upon finding a public toilet shut, were trying to find a place to relieve themselves in a dark alley behind a popular food hub near the Ultadanga-Lake Town flyover when they were attacked by a group of residents claiming they were urinating in front of their homes.
Along with the five girls, two of their male friends and father of one of the girls suffered injuries.
Two separate complaints have been registered in this case — one lodged by the girls and other by the slum dwellers with similar allegations of assault, molestation and theft.
