  • Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police is installing 94 new CCTV cameras on the 1.5 km stretch of VIP Road from Wednesday to ensure they have their eyes on the primary road to the airport. A section of the road is now shut to traffic for Metro construction work.

TOI has written how multiple stretches of VIP Road have been dug up and different traffic blocks and diversions are being taken to facilitate the New Garia-Airport Metro link project that triggered cops to improve their surveillance system in the area.

The Rs 1.7-crore project is being implemented by Webel Technology Ltd (WTL). Out of the 94 cameras, 89 will be high-end bullet cameras which are good for long-range viewing and their overt, obvious design also makes them effective deterrents in high density areas where people know they are being recorded.

There will also be four automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras that can detect, capture, and log vehicle license plates and a PTZ (pan tilt zoom) camera that swivel left to right, tilt up and down, and zoom in and out of a scene.

“Two ANPR CCTVs will be installed at Airport Gate no. 1 and another two will be installed at Airport Gate no. 3. Kaikhali Traffic Guard will be in charge of monitoring the cameras. The PTZ (Pan Tilt and Zoom) Camera will be installed at Airport Gate no. 1. The entire project is covered by a three-year warranty. Work will be completed in two months,” said an official.
