  • KOLKATA: A court in Serampore relied on the expertise of a ballistic expert, CCTV footage and call details – a multiple number of technical evidence – to send a person to ten years of prison in an attempt to murder case where a youth, Mithilesh Yadav was left physically handicapped for life after being shot at from the rear.

Akash Singh, who is convicted, stated through his lawyer that he might appeal to a higher court soon.

Singh has been convicted under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means).

According to public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee, the case was investigated by the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate after the shootout took place in September 2019. The chargesheet was filed in a record time and within a year of custody trial from the date of incident, the accused has been convicted.

According to Chatterjee, the accused used to reside at the same locality as that of victim and has procured the country made firearm from Munger in Bihar. “The victim had an altercation with the mother of the accused and as such, the accused decided to kill the victim. We examined ten witnesses and 39 documentary exhibits, and 31 material exhibits were placed before court,” stated Chatterjee.
