  • NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, which will be conducted in 7 phases from April 19 to June 1, spanning 543 constituencies. The model code of conduct has been in effect since the evening of March 16 and will remain until the completion of the counting process on June 4. In West Bengal, voting for the 42 Lok Sabha seats will take place across all seven phases.

    Kolkata, which comprises two Lok Sabha seats, is slated to vote on June 1, with the results expected to be declared by June 4.

    In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kolkata Uttar constituency recorded 1,444,082 electors and 950,613 valid votes. Bandyopadhyay Sudip of All India Trinamool Congress won with 474,891 votes, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party's Rahul (Biswajit) Sinha by 127,095 votes. In 2014, Sudip Bandyopadhyay emerged victorious with 343,687 votes, beating BJP's Rahul (Biswajit) Sinha by 96,226 votes, with 1,433,985 electors and 955,778 valid votes.

    Also, Kolkata Dakshin constituency had 1,728,851 electors and 1,206,645 valid votes. Mala Roy of All India Trinamool Congress won with 573,119 votes, defeating BJP's Chandra Kumar Bose by 155,192 votes. In 2014, Subrata Bakshi secured victory with 431,715 votes, surpassing BJP's Tathagata Roy by 136,339 votes, with 1,685,296 electors and 1,167,986 valid votes.

    Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on March 16 last year that an astounding 96.8 crore voters are set to cast their ballots in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The electoral process, being the largest in the world, will be facilitated by 10.5 lakh polling stations and 1.5 crore polling officials and security personnel.
