  • KOLKATA: Former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma, along with 11 Congress MLAs, is likely to defect to Trinamool Congress, senior Trinamool leaders confirmed on Wednesday night.

A formal announcement is likely on Thursday. Congress has 18 MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya legislative assembly. Sangma is leader of the opposition. This defection will make Trinamool the principal opposition party there.

Sangma is a five-time MLA who became CM in April 2010. There had been some reports of his growing rift with Congress and growing proximity to Trinamool. Several weeks earlier, both TMC and Congress had denied reports of a defection. On Wednesday night, however, senior Trinamool leaders who are aware of the developments “confirmed” that 12 of the 18 Congress MLAs are indeed joining the party. tnn
