The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday arrested Sandip Ghosh, the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital who has been in the eye of the rape-murder storm, in a corruption case.
Ghosh was taken to Nizam Palace, which houses the Economic Offences Unit of the CBI, for the arrest. The FIR against him has been filed under Section 173 of the BNS. The suspected offences, according to the FIR, are criminal conspiracy, cheating, and offence relating to public servant being bribed.
In the aftermath of the widespread protests over the rape and murder of a young doctor at the state-run healthcare hub, the state government had initiated a probe into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar.
Calcutta high court had transferred both probes – one into the rape-murder and one into the corruption – to the CBI.
The Mamata Banerjee government has faced uncomfortable questions, including from high court and Supreme Court judges, over Ghosh being reinstated hours after he had resigned taking “moral responsibility” over the rape-murder at RG Kar.
The CBI had interrogated Ghosh for 15 days at a stretch for long hours. The Kolkata Police had not even recorded Ghosh’s statement, according to the high court order that transferred the rape-murder probe to the CBI.
Ghosh’s not filing an FIR as the head of the institution where the rape-murder happened has also been under the lens of the judiciary.
