Brahmabandhab Upadhyay, theologian and freedom fighter, passed away on this day. He was born Bhabanicharan Bandyopadhyay in Khanyan, Hooghly, in a Hindu household.
He joined the Brahma Samaj under the influence of Keshabchandra Sen and later converted to Catholicism.
He also came under the influence of Swami Vivekananda. In the process of examining his beliefs, he named himself Brahmabandhab Upadhyay. He supported Rabindranath Tagore in setting up Brahmavidyalaya.
He started the journals Sophia and Sandhya and wrote prolifically in other journals as well, as a staunch critic of British imperialism. He was arrested in 1907 for sedition and died during the trial under treatment in a hospital.
