The Barrackpore Mutiny, the precursor of the Uprising of 1857, took place on this day.
During the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-26), Indian soldiers from the 47th Regiment were ordered to march to Chittagong by land because religious customs forbade Hindu men of higher castes to travel by sea.
Their belongings had to be transported as well following caste rules, but no bullocks were available because the army had already put the supply to use. Grudges intensified when camp followers were offered more money than soldiers.
The regiment refused to go on. The men were cornered on the parade ground, shot at by the artillery, and had to escape under fire. The regiment was removed from the army list, the leaders of the protest were sentenced to death and others were jailed.
