  • A teenager has been detained in connection with the murder of 57-year-old insurance agent Abhijit Banerjee who was found dead at his rented place in Jorabagan on Thursday morning.

Police said the youth suspected that his mother had a relationship with Banerjee.

The boy was detained from his home in Nadia district on Friday.

Police sources said upon analysing Banerjee’s call details records, it was found that he had exchanged several calls with a phone number registered in Nadia. On checking, it was found to be that of a woman.

“It was found that the woman had met Banerjee in connection with an insurance policy and had developed a friendship with him. Her son was averse to this,” said an officer of the north division of Kolkata Police.

The youth was detained and brought to Kolkata.

Banerjee had been found bleeding in his room on the top floor of a five-storeyed building in Jorabagan.

He lived in the terrace room on rent while some of his relatives lived on the lower floors.

The police said Banerjee owned a car, which he often rented out for commercial use.

On Thursday morning, the driver of the car went to meet him but found the door locked from inside. Banerjee did not respond to his calls, he reportedly told the police.

The cops said it was yet to be ascertained how the youth had climbed into the terrace room that was locked from outside.

“We will do a reconstruction of the crime. We will take the suspect to the crime scene,” said an officer of the homicide wing of the detective department of the Kolkata Police.
