  • Sandip Ghosh, during whose tenure as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a young doctor was raped and murdered, was produced in the Alipore court on Monday in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the hospital.

With him were produced his alleged accomplices — Afsar Ali, who was Ghosh’s additional security guard; Biplab Singha, who supplied medicines and other items to RG Kar; Suman Hazra, who allegedly supplied medicines and medical equipment at inflated rates to the hospital; and Asish Pandey, a house staff at the medical college.

All except Pandey were produced virtually.

The accused are in judicial custody.

Pandey, Hazra and Singha moved bail applications on Monday. The petitions will be heard on November 12.

The lawyer appearing for Singha said that other than RG Kar, his client supplied medicines to SSKM Hospital, Howrah Rural Hospital and Medical College Kolkata.

“My client supplied medicines to other hospitals, too. He had the credentials that helped him get the contract for supplying medicines to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital,” the lawyer said.

At this, the lawyer representing the CBI, which is investigating the complaints of financial malpractice at RG Kar along with the rape and murder, said the central agency has collected “a lot of material evidence” based on “serious allegations”.

“We are investigating whether there was any link between the two cases,” the CBI lawyer said.

When the court asked the CBI about the progress of the investigation, the lawyer said several incriminating documents had been found.

“For example, Ma Tara Traders was given the contract but the company did not participate in the tender process. There are many such documents,” the lawyer said.

According to the investigators, Ma Tara Traders is owned by Singha.
