A gardener who was watering plants inside a nursery in Rajarhat died after he touched a live wire wrapped around its fence on Thursday night, police said.
An officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said Subho Sardar, who hails from the Gazipur area in South 24-Parganas’ Bhangar, was working at the nursery near Jhaligachi in Rajarhat on Thursday night along with four other workers when he got electrocuted.
On Friday, the police arrested two workers of the nursery based on a complaint filed by his family members as to why the fence had been electrified.
An officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said Sardar’s family members lodged a complaint against other nursery workers and demanded a thorough and fair probe.
“We have started a case and have already arrested two men who work in the same nursery. We are probing why the nursery’s fence had been electrified. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fence had been electrified to ensure that plants and other items don’t get stolen from the nursery,” said the officer.
The police have questioned several nursery employees, and an officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said that, according to their statements, Sardar fell unconscious after he accidentally touched a wire that had been used to electrify the nursery’s fence.
“The other workers who were with him took him to Reckjoani rural hospital where the doctors declared him dead on arrival,” said the officer.
Sardar’s body has been sent for a post-mortem to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On Friday, Sardar’s father Dili said: “We were not given proper information by any of the other workers at the nursery about what could have led to his death. We demand a thorough investigation and appropriate punishment for those responsible for his untimely death.”
