  • The Enforcement Directorate launched an operation across multiple locations in Kolkata, including the residence of businessman Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu in Fern Road near Kasba, early Wednesday morning over money-laundering and extortion charges.

Pappu apparently holds sway over the prime south Kolkata localities of Kasba and Ballygunge and reportedly has several FIRs against him over various allegations. He is also a prime accused in the Golpark gang war that happened in February but he continues to evade the Kolkata police.

Officials have alleged that Pappu used to extort crores of rupees from construction companies, which would be rerouted to “influential” people.

The central agency has also launched a raid at the office of Sun Enterprises on Ashwini Dutta Road in Ballygunge to probe allegations of financial fraud amounting to several crores. It was not immediately clear whether Pappu has any connection with this company.

The development comes shortly after the central agency questioned Trinamool Rashbehari MLA Debasish Kumar on Monday in connection with the agency’s probe into an alleged scam involving land procurement for projects and subsequent duping of investors.

Kumar was called for questioning within 48 hours of ED raids across multiple locations in Kolkata and the districts.

The central team has also conducted a search at the multi-storey flat of a businessman in Ballygunge Place, Kolkata. ED sources claimed that the search operation was conducted on charges of financial corruption.
