  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Police STF nabbed a drug peddler trying to sell heroin worth Rs 5 crore near Sealdah station, hours before New Year’s Eve. A very small amount of synthetic drugs has also been seized from him, sources said.

“On the afternoon of December 30, acting on a tip, a team of Kolkata Police STF intercepted Nadia-based drug peddler Prasanta Sarkar (26) from the Sealdah Station Road area and seized around 1kg of high-quality heroin from him. The international grey market value of the seized drug is around Rs 5.1 crore,” said joint CP (STF) Solomon V Nesakumar.

Sarkar claimed he has a steady client base amongst students and professionals, for whom he procured the drug. A case under the stringent NDPS Act has been registered against him.

In separate raids, the detective department seized pipes and chillums, and arrested seven, from two hookah bars in the Phoolbagan area — on NM Road and CIT Road. One of the accused, sources said, is also a call centre fraud mastermind who had been arrested earlier by Bidhannagar cops.
