  • If everything goes according to the plan, Kolkatans could get a new Metro line operational in a few weeks. An inspection on the stretch between New Garia and Ruby was conducted by the commissioner of railway safety today.

The 5.4km Metro corridor was busier than other days this morning. Preparations were carried out in full swing by the city Metro and the implementing agency, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for the inspection. Accompanied by senior officials of Kolkata Metro Railway and RVNL, the commissioner of railway safety of NF Circle, Suvomoy Mitra, inspected the Kavi Subhash metro station and different passenger and safety amenities at the premises.

According to sources, he also boarded an AC rake and a test for speed of the train was also conducted. He inspected the station control panel, fire detection system, platforms, tracks, escalators, lifts and different passenger amenities at the stations of the Orange Line.

He also inspected the Metro viaduct along the stretch. Notably, trial runs were conducted in the truncated stretch of the New Garia and Airport Metro corridor between New Garia and Ruby since the month of September. As the section is yet to have hi-tech communication-based train control (CBTC) signaling system, the test runs of this stretch was being carried out by using non-AC rakes in the ‘one train on one line’ system.

Once the upcoming stretch is operational, Kavi Subhash station is expected to become a juncture of two crucial Metro corridors, the older NorthSouth Kavi Subhas-Dakshineswar line and the New Garia-Airport corridor.
