• Rain and thunderstorms likely in south Bengal today; temperature expected to rise after tomorrow

  • The India Meteorological Department has forecast that thunderstorms are likely on Monday and that light to moderate rain is likely to continue till Tuesday in West Bengal’s southern districts. Temperatures may rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius after Tuesday.

    The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms with gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) for most districts for Monday.

    On Sunday, Kolkata recorded the maximum temperature of 32.7 degrees Celsius during the daytime, with the maximum humidity at 93 per cent. The sky remained generally cloudy. There was an orange alert for thunderstorms, rain and lightning for parts of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia.

    In the other parts of south Bengal, Jhargram recorded the maximum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperatures in Bankura, Sriniketan, Burdwan, Asansol and Barrackpore hovered around 31-34 degrees Celsius on May 11.

    On the northern side, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely to continue this week in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur districts. An orange alert for gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) has been issued for several places.
