  • A 51-year-old man was killed due to a wall collapse in Kolkata as Cyclone Remal left a trail of widespread destruction across West Bengal after making landfall between the coasts of the state and Bangladesh on Sunday night.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Sajib. According to officials, a cement tile fell on his head at Bibir Bagan in the Entali area of the city.

In its latest update on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Cyclone Remal has weakened into a “cyclonic storm” and is likely to gradually weaken even further during the course of Monday.

On Sunday night, torrential rains accompanied by strong wind uprooted numerous trees, damaged electricity poles, and caused property damage and road blockage. Heavy rains resulted in waterlogging in many low-lying areas, further impeding movement within Kolkata. According to the weather office, it rained 144 mm on Sunday night only in Kolkata.

Commuters faced difficulties as train services remained cancelled in many areas. Meanwhile, flight operations at the Kolkata airport resumed at around 9 am Monday after being suspended since Sunday noon. However, officials said delays and cancellations are expected.

As for Metro services, due to waterlogging on tracks between Park Street and Esplanade stations, truncated services are running between Dakshineswar and Girish Park as well as Kavi Subhash and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar stations from 7.51 am. The movement of trains on the Sealdah South Branch has also been suspended.

Municipal authorities and disaster management teams are working to clear debris, remove fallen trees, and restore normalcy to the city. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Meanwhile, a red alert has been issued in two districts of the state – Murshidabad and Nadia. These two districts are likely to receive 7 to 20 cm of rain on Monday. Eight districts, including Kolkata, are likely to experience thundershowers and gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph.

Continuous rain is likely in Kolkata on Monday under the influence of Cyclone Remal. Storm speed may reach 60 to 70 km per hour. Temporarily gusty wind speed can reach up to 80 km. Apart from Kolkata, heavy rain is expected in Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, West Burdwan and Birbhum, the Met office said. These districts may have wind gusts of up to 60 km per hour.

According to the forecast, the heavy rain will decrease on Monday as Cyclone Remalis gradually moves further northeast. However, stormy winds are still blowing on the coast of southern Bengal on Monday.

According to the IMD, Cyclone Remal over coastal Bangladesh and adjoining coastal West Bengal has moved nearly northwards at a speed of 15 kmph during the past six hours. It has weakened into a cyclonic storm and is currently centred over the same region, about 150 km northeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal), 110 km northwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 70 km northeast of Canning (West Bengal), and 30 km west-southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh). The system is initially likely to move north-northeastwards, subsequently northeastwards and gradually weaken further. Gale wind speeds reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph are prevailing along and off Bangladesh and West Bengal and North Bay of Bengal and are likely to decrease gradually, becoming squally winds with speeds reaching 50-60 Kmph gusting to 70 kmph by Monday noon.

A generally cloudy sky is expected. Rain/thundershower with one or two intense spells (2-3 cm/hr) of rain and strong gusty surface wind are very likely. The maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to be around 29 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.
