  • Kolkata: Ananya and Priya, two cartoon characters have been introduced by the state higher education department on Sunday to assist students to fill the forms for undergraduate courses on the centralized admission portal.

The move is aimed at encouraging more students to apply.

The education department has prepared six audio-visual cartoons where Ananya in a red T-shirt and Priya in a violet T-shirt are found discussing about the last date of application, followed by some information like the helpline number, email IDs and the said website.

An official of the higher education department told TOI, “This time, the students have been applying through a single window, and we are overwhelmed after receiving feedback from the applicants as well as the colleges that are part of the portal. We took a decision in a meeting to prepare cartoons to attract the tech-savvy young generation who could easily relate to these characters and find them attractive, especially since there is only a week left before the portal closes.”

This time, there is a single window for applying to the undergraduate courses in state-aided colleges. The admission portal has been open for seven days, receiving applications from over 4,00,000 students. Now, there is only one week left for online submission, and the portal will be closed on July 7.

Principals of several city colleges said the system has saved them from unnecessary hazards during the admission season, which used to be the most hectic for them in the previous years.
