  • Kolkata: A businessman, Hafizur Sheikh (52) was shot at by his neighbour at Nimta in North Dum Dum late on Saturday night during the celebration of India’s T20 World Cup victory in the area. Police arrested the accused, identified as Farooq Ahmed, with a firearm.

According to local sources, the incident took place around 11.45 pm when the locals started celebrating India’s win by bursting firecrackers at Nimta’s Fatullahpur at ward 34 in North Dum Dum Municipality.

“Suddenly, we heard a gunshot but initially ignored it as we thought it as the sound of bursting firecrackers. But we immediately found Sheikh lying in a pool of blood and the accused neighbour Ahmed holding a gun trying to flee the spot,” a local woman said. Locals then chased Ahmed and caught him and informed police.

Sheikh, who was struck by a bullet in his abdomen, was rushed to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

A team from Nimta PS rushed to the spot and arrested Ahmed with a revolver.

“During an altercation, Ahmed fired at Sheikh from a point blank range. We suspect an old rivalry could have led to the attack,” a senior police officer of the Barrackpore commissionerate said.

Ahmed has been remanded in police custody for five days after being produced in a Barrackpore court on Sunday afternoon.
