• IMD: Expect heavy to very heavy rainfall today, yellow alert issued for North Bengal

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in West Bengal on Sunday after parts of the state received heavy showers on Saturday.

    A yellow alert has been issued for North Bengal, particularly Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur that are likely to receive heavy rain (7–20 cm).

    Additionally, the yellow alert has been issued for North and South 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts.

    The weather department said, “Yesterday’s low-pressure area now lies over the Northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining the north Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal coasts, with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places to occur over the districts of West Bengal.”

    A high wave alert has been issued, particularly for the coasts of North and South 24 Parganas (2.0–2.3 metre wave range) and Purba Medinipur (1.9–2.3 metre wave range) and the fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea due to high waves till Sunday night.
