• CBI arrests absconding woman accused in 19-year-old Kolkata bank fraud case

  • The CBI on Wednesday arrested a woman in a 19-year-old bank fraud case.

    The arrested accused, identified as Munmun Das, was designated as a Proclaimed Offender (PO) and she was absconding for several years.

    The CBI had registered a case on September 29, 2005, and the accused was charge-sheeted along with 28 others in the course of the investigation. The accused woman used to allegedly submit false documents for housing loans and defraud banks.

    “The charges against the accused include defrauding SBI Kabardanga Road Branch, Kolkata by fraudulently submitting housing loan application forms for various individuals between June 2004 and August 2004. Incomplete documents were used to sanction housing loans, resulting in a pecuniary loss to the SBI Kabardanga Road branch,” said a CBI statement.

    As per the CBI, the accused had been absconding since July 7, 2011.

    “Continuous efforts by the CBI officers to trace the PO through technical surveillance as well as by cultivating sources for the purpose ultimately resulted in the arrest of the accused,” said CBI officials.

    The woman was produced before a CBI Special Court on Thursday and sent to judicial custody till July 2.
