• 23-yr-old dies 9 days after thrashing by mob for 'theft' in West Bengal

  • MIDNAPORE: A 23-year-old, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday at Jhargram Medical College Hospital, nine days after being beaten by a mob in Jamboni on suspicion of theft. His friend, Akshay Mahato, remains hospitalised.

    The deceased, Sourav Sau, was from the Jhargram's Benageria. According to Sourav's family, the two friends had taken a scooter to Khatkhura on June 22.The mob accused them of stealing items from vehicles parked at a construction site in Khatkhura. Jamboni police arrived at the scene and rescued the two, and took them to Jhargram Government Medical College and Hospital.

    Sourav's father, Avani Sau, a toto driver, said, "My son went out with his friend on a scooter. Locals suspected them of being thieves and beat them up. We learned about the incident through Jamboni police station. When we arrived at the hospital, we found my son and his friend admitted there. My son died this morning while receiving treatment. It's not right to beat someone on suspicion of theft; that's what the police are for. We demand exemplary punishment for those responsible for this incident."

    An official from Jhargram district police said, "A case has been registered regarding the incident. The investigation is ongoing."
