  • NEW DELHI: BJP president JP Nadda criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal on Monday over a video showing a man brutally assaulting a couple in public.

"A horrific video has come to light from West Bengal, reminding of the brutalities that exist only in theocracies. To make matters worse, the TMC cadre and MLAs are justifying the act," Nadda said in a post on X.

Nadda further criticized the safety of women in West Bengal, "Be it Sandeshkhali, Uttar Dinajpur or many other places, Didi's West Bengal is UNSAFE for women."

In response to the incident, the West Bengal Police filed a case on Sunday.

The assault took place in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur district, where a local TMC leader allegedly attacked the couple with a bamboo stick after a kangaroo court verdict.

The accused identified as Tajmul alias JCB, has been arrested.
