  • NEW DELHI: Coming down heavily on the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday compared it to the Taliban's harsh regime in Afghanistan over a viral video showing a man thrashing a couple in public in the Uttar Dinajpur district.

In a post on 'X', Shehzad criticized leaders from the India Bloc for their silence on the issue.

"This kangaroo court is taking place in broad daylight, but Mamata didi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Sagarika Ghose, Mahua Moitra, Rahul Gandhi, and the entire cabal will be silent. They were silent on the Swati Maliwal case and incidents in Sandeshkhali too," Poonawalla said.

"Sandeshkhali, post-poll violence, rapes, a Muslim BJP woman leader stripped for supporting BJP - the list of violence and women being tortured is endless in West Bengal. Law and order RIP! But will the INDI speak up like it did during Manipur?" he wrote.

The West Bengal Police had registered a case over the incident on Sunday.

The man seen in the video beating up the couple with a bamboo stick was allegedly a local TMC leader from Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur, where the incident occurred following a kangaroo court decision. The accused, Tajmul alias JCB, has been arrested.
