  • Kolkata: A forensic team reached the Udayan hostel on Monday, three days after a 37-year-old TV and mobile mechanic was allegedly lynched by several hostel inmates, all of whom are now in police custody. The development came on the same day when cops said that at least two more students involved directly are absconding.

Irshad Alam, a resident of Belgachhia, was allegedly assaulted to death on suspicion of mobile theft leading cops to arrest 14 hostel residents so far.The forensic team reportedly collected multiple samples — especially from the second floor where the alleged incident took place — that included blood stains and a broken bat.

Cops also questioned the hostel super on Monday. “He said he was not present in the hostel at that time,” said an officer. Sources though claimed that they have come to know that the alleged assault on the mechanic was video-recorded. “A search is on to recover the video footage. We might collect some mobiles of 50-odd boarders. It has come come to our notice that the claims by students that ex-students worked there as cooks and guards were fake and an attempt to justify their illegal stay at the hostel,” said a senior officer.

According to police, a decision has been taken for the reconstruction of the incident. The two former students, one of whom acted as a security guard, have been identified as the main conspirators so far.

Officials also searched both the ground and second floors of the hostel for additional leads for over an hour. Previously, the police had recovered several bats and sticks from the hostel, which are being examined by forensic experts to determine if they were used in the assault.
