  • Kolkata: Two women – hailing from Kalupur, Ahmedabad and currently residing in Rishra, Hooghly – were arrested from the Hooghly PS area for allegedly robbing at least two persons, one of them being an employee of a jewellery firm on June 11. Cops said a total of around Rs 15 lakh was robbed this month by the accused, Sova Rajput (50) and Hansa Prem Solanki (35).

The accused followed a unique modus operandi – while the young woman used to strike a conversation, the elder woman would steal the cash from the victim. During both the robberies, the women travelled between Sealdah and Howrah.

“It took only 20 minutes for Siddhartha Sarkar to lose Rs 9.4 lakh. The money belonged to a silver business in which he was an employee. The incident, which occurred on June 11, was reported to Jorasanko Police Station by the business owner. Sarkar had boarded a bus from Beadon Street to M G Road-Rabindra Sarani crossing, when he was befriended by two women. Once he got off the bus, he felt that his bag was lighter and upon checking he realized that the cash had gone missing,” said an officer.

Cops gathered footage of over 40 CCTVs to investigate the series of incidents on the day of the robbery.

“Probes suggest that Sarkar had been targeted by the women even before he boarded the bus. Most of the recovered footage was grainy and our team struggled to find a clear image to identify the accused. After thorough analysis of the footage, cops were able to locate Sova and Hansa, both originally from Kalupur area of Ahmedabad and currently residents of Rishra, Hooghly. Both were arrested from the Hooghly PS area. Cash worth Rs 9,03,000 has been recovered so far. Further investigations are on,” said additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma.
