• Kol’s Jan-June battery EV sales this yr outdo diesel’s

  • Kolkata: More ‘battery electric vehicles’ (BEVs) have been sold in Kolkata than diesel-run ones in the first six months of 2024, the first time the former category has outsold the latter in a city that was, not too long ago, dubbed the country’s ‘diesel capital’.

Between January and June, 1,244 BEVs and 1,146 diesel-run vehicles were registered in the Public Vehicles Department (PVD), the regional transport authority.

Whereas all electric vehicles require some sort of a battery to run, the term ‘BEV’ is to differentiate veh-icles that run on rechargeable batteries from those that are ‘pure EV’ — which run on solar power.

BEVs outdoing diesel is a “significant” milestone, said transport and green experts, who felt this was in line with a broader shift towards cleaner fuels.
