• Once-a-wk drive to rein in parking touts

  • Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Kolkata Police will strengthen their drive against illegal parking and review the punitive action that needs to be taken on the ground to book parking touts.

At a meeting held in the KMC headquarters and attended by MMiC (parking) Debasis Kumar, DC (traffic) Yeliwad Shrikant Jagannathrao and senior KMC car parking department officials, it was decided that the joint drives would be held once a week to rein in youths that operate as parking attendants and indulge in extortion.

“From now, on-ground action against parking mafias will be taken based on accurate information about the location of parking lots,” said Kumar. “From our experiences we have learnt that if we don’t search for legal parking based on the location of the premises, chances are that we may not pinpoint the extent of illegal parking,” he added.

According to KMC records, there is a provision for parking 55 cars on Kyd Street. But parking at this lot is not tagged with premises and an on-the-spot survey will show that parking space has shrunk due to no-parking on a stretch near the MLA hostel.

“We have decided to display parking fees on glow sign boards at parking lots and will request the motorists to lodge complaints against attendants who demand more money,” said a KMC parking department senior official.
