• Borough officials to keep eye on hawkers

  • Kolkata: A civic official in each borough will be tasked to keep a hawk eye on hawker encroachment in the wards in his jurisdiction. A senior KMC official said that an official would be identified in each borough and given the responsibility of monitoring the hawking zones and identify violations and encroachments for corrective action.

    KMC has 16 borough offices at BT Road, Bidhan Sarani, CR Avenue, Surya Sen Street, Moulana A K Azad Sarani, CR Avenue, Surya Sen Street, Hogg Street, AJC Bose Road, Rashbehari Avenue, Belvedere Road, Prince Anwar Shah Road, Baghajatin, Garfa, Diamond Harbour, Garden Reach and Joka.There are seven to 12 wards under each borough office. KMC has 144 wards under its administration.

    The borough officers will update the headquarters about the matter. If any encroachment is found, the civic officials and town-vending committee members will take a call on the matter.

    A TVC member said, “The civic body is going to roll out an app that will contain details about the hawkers being surveyed and also geo-fence them. It has been decided that local borough officers will check the hawker situation using the app and keep headquarters posted about their findings.”
