  • A mother and son were allegedly severely beaten up by men Sunday night, days after the Chopra couple whipping incident, in Kamarhati municipality’s Ariadaha of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

As the CCTV footage went viral on Tuesday, neighbours and eye witnesses said the local “bahubali” Jayant Singh’s associates came over to Sayandip Panja’s house after a former altercation between the two parties. The men allegedly dragged Panja from the house and started beating him, and thrashed his mother and a friend, Surya Kumar Das, with bamboo and hockey sticks, and a cricket wicket when they tried to intervene.

Panja and his mother are admitted to a local private hospital.

Police have detained six people so far but the locals said the main accused, Singh, is yet to be arrested.

BJP MLA Susanta Ghosh said, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed she had control over criminals but they are dancing on her head. “She should resign from the Home Minister post,” Ghosh said.

A TMC functionary was captured tape whipping and assaulting a woman and a man over an alleged extramarital affair, in Uttar Dinajpur’ Chopra block on June 28. Said to be involved in such ‘salishi sabhas’ (kangaroo courts) to deliver instant justice, Tajimul Islam, locally known as ‘JCB’, was arrested and brought to the Islampur police station.
