  • Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday allowed Bengal BJP to hold a peaceful sit-in demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan in protest against alleged cases of post-poll violence in Bengal. BJP can hold the demonstration for four hours starting from 10am on July 14.

BJP had moved court after its application for staging a dharna in front of Raj Bhavan was turned down by police on the ground that the area was under prohibitory orders.BJP in its application had referred to the dharna staged by Trinamool general secretary Abhishek Banerjee at the same spot on Oct 5 last year.

Justice Amrita Sinha granted permission to BJP based on the submission by advocate general Kishore Datta who upon instructions from the state submitted that BJP would be permitted to stage dharna at the spot it had requested. Datta pleaded with the court that the permission should not be a precedence for others. Justice Sinha didn’t dispose of the matter. “I am keeping the petition alive. Will hear the matter again on Aug 2,” Justice Sinha said.

The high court had earlier directed the state to submit a report on what steps had been taken against Trinamool seniors who had staged the dharna in Oct. The advocate general had submitted that no step had been taken so far.
