  • Kolkata: Work on the airport-bound flank at New Town’s Technopolis crossing started on Wednesday for the Orange line’s Nabadiganta Metro station, after RVNL performed the customary puja on Tuesday. Cars and buses are flowing normally, as an extra road space has been created for the same area that has been barricaded for the metro work.

Bidhannagar Police’s traffic department on Monday issued the no-objection certificate (NOC) allowing Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) a traffic block “for construction of entry structure C of the overhead metro station and the pedestrian holding area at the roadside garden at Technopolis crossing”.Although no timeframe was mentioned in the NOC addressed to RVNL, sources said the work for this part of the metro station would take at least a year.

Till Monday, cops had conducted traffic trials to test the behaviour of airport-bound vehicles through a barricaded lane in the middle of Biswa Bangla Sarani at Technopolis crossing.

A visit to the site on Wednesday showed traffic moving normally despite the regulations. RVNL has deployed 40 traffic marshals in the stretch so that Sector V employees and those travelling through New Town to VIP Road and the NSCB Airport have no trouble negotiating the latest negotiations. “Even as the diversion for Salt Lake or Kolkata-bound vehicles are in place for construction of the other part (segments) of the Nabadiganta metro station, traffic is flowing seamlessly,” a traffic marshal deployed at the Sector V-Mahisbathan crossing said.
