Kolkata: The city’s first fully automated abattoir, which was closed in 2017, is set to reopen. A proposal for its reopening was passed in the mayor-in-council meeting on Wednesday. The supply of buffaloes had reduced to a trickle ever since the row over cattle sale picked up across the country. This, and a subsequent litigation, forced KMC to shut the abattoir down.
The abattoir was inaugurated in Dec 2012, but operations took a hit since Dec 2016 when there was a drop in cattle supply from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana. Spread over a plot of 1.8 acres on the eastern fringes of the city, the automated abattoir with a capacity to store and slaughter 1,200 large animals every day has raised hopes among meat sellers in the city.
