  • 12 Kolkata: The primary report in the infection cases post cataract surgery at state-run Metiabruz Supespecilaty Hospital points to the use of contaminated saline solution for cleaning eyes . The report was submitted to the health officials at Swasthya Bhawan on Thursday.

“ Investigation is on to zero down if there were other causes,” said a senior health official.Around 35 patients had undergone cataract surgery at the Metiabruz hospital during a special camp between Friday and Saturday. They are mostly residents of Garden Reach, Metiabruz and Nadiyal. Many complained of blurry vision, pain and redness in the eye after the opening of the bandage. The hospital called all those who had undergone the procedure and sent 16 of them to Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) Kolkata.

Meanwhile, senior officials assured families of the 16 patients at the Swasthya Bhawan that the best care was being given to them. Locals claim that many of them have lost their vision. “The 16 patients are undergoing conservative treatment with antibiotics. They will be reviewed after 48 hours and if needed another surgery will be conducted,” said a health official.

“Contaminated saline solution is a potent source of infection. How a patient responds to the antibiotics will also depend onother health factors,” said Gautam Bhaduri, former director of RIO.
