  • Kolkata: Jayant Singh, an Ariadaha tough, was arrested early on Thursday for masterminding the attack on a 20-year-old college student, Sayandip Panja, and his 45-year-old mother, Bubun, over a rivalry between two local clubs. Singh, who had fled the area after the assault around 1.30 am on Monday, was arrested from Bonhoogly near ISI off B T Road in Dunlop, where he had gone to meet a relative, police said.

Sayandip’s sister lodged a complaint at the Dakshineswar PS against Singh and his associates, alleging they were still threatening her and other family members, demanding they withdraw the complaint.

With the arrest of Singh, the total number of arrests in the case stands at nine, all of them members of Ariadaha Tataltala Sporting Club, said police. Sayandip and his friends were members of the rival club, Addyama Balak Sangha, they added. “This seems to be the fallout of a syndicate rivalry between two groups over the control of local clubs,” an officer said.

“Planning to escape to Odisha, Singh went to Bonhoogly to collect money from a relative. Acting on a tip-off, cops from the Belgharia police station arrested him,” said a senior Barrackpore commissionerate officer. He has been booked for attempt to murder, voluntarily causing grievous injuries and criminal conspiracy and remanded in police custody for four days.

Sayandip and his mother are still in hospital.
