• 2 more arrested in Chopra flogging case; NHRC team meets victims, their families

  • Police have arrested two more persons in connection with the public flogging of a couple over their alleged extramarital affair in Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur district.

    With this, the total number of people arrested for the June 28 incident has risen to four.

    According to police, the two arrested accused have been identified as Taherul Islam and Abdul Raf, both residents of Lakhipur gram panchayat.

    Police on Sunday registered a suo motu case after the video of the incident that happened on Friday went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage. The man seen in the video beating up the couple with a bamboo stick was identified as Tajmul alias JCB, who claimed to be a local TMC leader. He was arrested on Sunday. Police have invoked sections of attempt to murder and molestation against him.

    On Wednesday, another person, Amirul Islam alias Badhua, was arrested from near the Bangladesh border. He was spotted in the video of the incident.

    Meanwhile, a team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) reached Chopra and met the victim couple. “The four-member team met the victim couple and spoke to their families for nearly two hours. Their statements were also recorded. They will soon file a report on the incident and submit it to the Commission for further course of action,” said an official.

    The victim couple was in a relationship despite being married to their respective partners. On June 28, a salishi sabha or kangaroo court was called, during which the main accused, TMC’s Tajamul Islam alias JCB, showed up. Clad in a black t-shirt Islam led the assault on the couple. Surrounded by a crowd of dozens, the man and the woman were flogged relentlessly, even as they writhed in pain on the ground and begged for mercy. The incident took place a stone’s throw from the woman’s home.
