  • Durgapur: Mystery shrouds a second-year nursing student’s death in Bengaluru on Saturday evening. Identified as Diya Mondal (19) of Gopalpur village of Kanksa, West Burdwan, she was found hanging from her dupatta inside her hostel room. The girl’s mother has urged CM Mamata Banerjee for a proper investigation.

According to Diya’s mother Bonani Roy Mondal, she spoke to her on Saturday around 6 pm.In the next one hour, a friend of Diya received a call claiming that she has committed suicide. “She seemed normal as she spoke to me. How can anyone talk normally and commit suicide after that?” she asked.

Diya’s mother claimed the girl was mentally strong. “She would often support others who were depressed. She can never commit suicide,” she said. She also claimed to have heard of a local boy who had disturbed her.

Diya’s uncle Bholanath Roy said that her father had reached Bengaluru by Sunday afternoon and lodged a complaint with the local police station. Police had meanwhile sent the body for autopsy and handed it over to her father, Debashis Mandal who left for Kolkata with the body. “We received the call around 7.15 pm. There was no financial pressure on her. We tried to support her as best as we could. However, she could have told us if there had been any financial trouble,” Roy said.

He also alleged non-cooperation from the nursing college authority “We will only get to know the reason of the death after the post-mortem report comes in,” Roy said.

State minister Pradeep Majumdar, who visited the girl’s family members at Gopalpur, said the state govt is providing all support in bringing her body back.
