  • The condition of former Railway minister and veteran politician leader Mukul Roy, who was admitted to a hospital on Thursday after he fell down at his residence, is critical, doctors said on Saturday.

An official at the hospital said Roy is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). “Roy’s condition is critical. Doctors are monitoring his health round the clock,” said the official.

Roy’s son Subhrangshu Roy told mediapersons on Saturday that his father is “responding to treatment.” “After surgery, he was kept on ventilation support for observation purposes. But he is out of ventilation support now. He is still in the ICU. He is critical but stable. He is responding to treatment and is in much better condition than on Friday.”

Roy is one of the founding members of the Trinamool Congress, which was floated after party chairperson Mamata Banerjee decided to break away from the Congress in 1998. Roy joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2017 and won from Krishnanagar Uttar constituency in the 2021 Assembly polls on a BJP ticket.

Roy returned to the TMC later but remained a BJP MLA on paper.
