  • KOLKATA: Some trees which earlier had to be uprooted at VIP Road Haldiram crossing to make way for the metro construction work and were replanted on the Salt Lake side of VIP Road beside Kestopur canal are drooping with leaves that have withered. PWD authorities are trying to rejuvenate the trees but if they die, they will plant fresh ones.

Several such trees which earlier had to make way for metro construction work have been successfully replanted at biodiversity park off VIP Road at Bangur.Officials said that earlier, nearly 250 trees had to make their way out near Haldiram crossing for the metro construction work and were replanted off the VIP road stretch from Lake Town to Kestopur.

"It is difficult for all replanted trees to survive hundred percent. A few trees have been badly scorched during the last intense heat spell. We are still trying to strengthen and tighten the soil grip for the trees to stand firm and continue to grow on. If any of the tree dries out then as compensatory plantation five more new trees will be planted at the place. Tenders have been floated and we are waiting for the monsoon rain to set in for the trees to get a fresh lease of life," said a PWD official.
