  • Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has asked the administration, led by the chief secretary, to call a meeting of four railway zones — the eastern, southeastern, NFR and the metro — to ask them to ensure there is proper drainage and removal of silt in their areas, especially at construction sites across the city.

“The Metro work is choking drains. If water accumulates, mosquitoes can breed there and dengue can take place. They do not carry out proper desilting,” Banerjee said.

She also hit out at the railway department and said that although the railways received a lot of money from the region, it did not take any initiative to restore normalcy in flooded areas.

“Railways earns a lot of money from here. If spots get flooded near railway lines, then why will the railway not restore normalcy there? Transformers have to be restored at certain places,” the chief minister said.

The CM asked the state’s chief secretary to speak to the railway authorities to ensure cleaning of their areas to ensure there is no waterlogging during monsoon.
