Kolkata: Police carried out a drive on Tuesday in which over 18 prosecutions took place around Maidan. Cops said the problem was turning acute around Queensway and Hospital Road, especially after commercial vehicles were being pushed out by cops from unauthorized lots located between Strand Road and Camac Street.
The South Traffic Guard played a cat-and-mouse game with motorists and riders on Tuesday.Cops said several indulged in illegal parking both on the edge and even inside Maidan. Kolkata Police formed a special team to ensure that this illegal parking got contained, ending with 18 prosecutions on a single day. Several of these were repeat offenders who had to cough Rs 1,500 instead of Rs 500 for the first offence.
“This was a major headache even on Tuesday. Even as we concentrated on one end of Maidan, we received inputs of illegal parking from another,” said an officer. An inspector has been assigned to lead the team of five sergeants and 10 constables, along with green police personnel.
